Talent Strategy

People- The Biggest Barrier to People Strategies

Blog: Author: Alan Mellish | Source: HCI | January 30, 2012

Manufacturing and a few other sectors are showing signs of life these days as they purchase equipment, supplies, and add employees. However, lest anyone believe the recovery is finally gaining momentum I’ll remind them that 2011’s year-over-year growth in U.S. GDP dropped below 1.6% which could foreshadow another recession.  While the economy shows some signs of life it is no mystery why businesses have yet to deploy their formidable cash reserves in a headlong hiring spree.  This does not mean that organizations are sitting on their hands waiting for that great beast we call “Consumer Demand” to rear its insatiable head again.  In the face of uncertainty, organizations are attempting to capitalize on all profitable opportunities short term while keeping the long term in mind in the development of strategies for the unpredictable future. What does this have to do with human capital strategy? Everything. more »

City Beat: Atlanta

Blog: Author: Alan Mellish | Source: HCI | January 24, 2012

This week, we are pulling into Atlanta, Georgia. In addition to being the site of our 2012 Strategy and Workforce Planning Conference, this growing metropolis goes by many names: Hotlanta, ATL, and the City too Busy to Hate.  Between 2000 and 2009, the metro population grew by 29.9% and every day the city grows by 62.4% in population as 259,957 commuters make their way into work from the suburbs. Atlanta ranks 4th in the nation for the number of Fourtune 500 companies headquartered within city boundaries. Finally, with the median age at 31.9 it is among the younger large cities in the U.S. In short, it appears the ATL is a magnet for talent. more »

Talent Success, or Failure, Begins with Workforce Planning

Blog: Author: Amy Lewis | Source: HCI | January 23, 2012

Do you agree with this statement?  Most likely this discipline is either underdeveloped or non-existent at your organization.  In 2008, noted talent thinker Peter Cappelli cited research that demonstrated less than two-thirds of U.S. Employers had a formal workforce plan.  In 2012 research from HCI and partner HumanConcepts, we found that number to have stayed the same, despite increased exposure and awareness. (Only 41% of respondents reported having a workforce plan that was built off of a clearly articulated business strategy.) more »

City Beat: San Diego

Blog: Author: Alan Mellish | Source: HCI | January 17, 2012

Next up in the City Beat Chronicles: San Diego, California. Known as “America’s Finest City”, eighth largest city in the United States, and a hub of trade, tourism, manufacturing, and defense/military jobs, this city is home to diverse and youthful talent.  However, with the growing economic woes of the Golden State this town is getting less youthful. In a Brookings Institute study, San Diego reported the sixth biggest net loss of residents aged 25-34 between 2008 and 2010 in the U.S.   The population of San Diego proper is about 1.3 million, with the metro area weighing in at a whopping 3 million.  Like much of California, this city suffers from an unemployment rate higher than the national average at 9.2 percentmore »

Solve Those Sticky Business Problems

Blog: Author: Amy Lewis | Source: HCI | January 9, 2012

Every business has a host of tricky issues to address, and limited people resources to devote to their solution.  At some organizations, this paradigm would mean that the problem remains unsolved.   more »

The Decision Science of Human Capital

Blog: Author: Carl Rhodes | Source: HCI | December 19, 2011

Hello, my name is Carl Rhodes, and I’m the CEO of HCI.  There are three things that are unusual about this digest.

One, and least importantly, it’s written by me.  I don’t write many digests (some might say I’m not allowed to write many digests, but let’s set that aside for now).  But I wanted to write this one.

Two, it’s late December, in which many companies are making critical decisions about their organizations and people in 2012 (often tied to budget dollars). more »

City Beat: Austin

Blog: Author: Alan Mellish | Source: HCI | December 5, 2011

It’s back! The City Beat blog is beating its way down south for some Texas-sized talent talk.  That’s right, Austin, TX (aka the Live Music Capital of the World aka Silicon Hills).  In a recent Brookings Institution report, Austin was the fifth biggest gainer of 25-34 year-olds between 2008 and 2010 in the U.S.  With a population of 799, 446 in the city limits and approximately 1.8 million in the greater metropolitan area, Austin has a winning combination of being a “cool city” attractive to Generation Y workers (see Portland, OR) but also has the additional benefit of being a high tech city home to many IT, defense,  and bio-tech/pharma firms.   Unemployment in Austin was at 6.1% in March 2011 which is none too shabby compared with the national rate at 8.6% in November of 2011 and the Texan rate at 8.4%. more »

Policy, and Reaction, Matter

Blog: Author: Amy Lewis | Source: HCI | December 5, 2011

Following a recent firing of an employee last month because of a Facebook post, new light was shed on one of our world’s most private companies, Apple, last week with the external publication of its social network/public commentary policy.  (For the full policy, check out the site 9to5mac.com).  In a series of several posts, the employee criticized the iPhone, several apps, and his job.  A friend, and co-worker, told management about the posts, which resulted in his summary dismissal. more »

Proper Prior Planning

Blog: Author: Amy Lewis | Source: HCI | November 21, 2011

Perhaps you’ve heard of the 7Ps before.  “Proper prior planning prevents poor performance.”  (Ok, so one ‘p’ was deleted- it’s a mildly offensive expletive.)  In talent management, this planning usually takes the form of some sort of workforce planning.  At HCI, we use a framework to clarify the distinction between operational and strategic workforce planning  (By the way, if you are interested in learning more about strategic workforce planning and how to move into a new dimension at your org, be sure to sign up for our Strategic Workforce Planning certification.) more »
