Social Media Will Not Make up for a Poor Recruiting Strategy

Blog: Author: Alan Mellish | Source: HCI | 3 days ago

Dear Talent Acquisition Professionals, stop babbling about social media all the time. Social media is an important tool but that is all it is.  While there is a wide variety of social media tools to cut out much of the legwork, the fact remains that without a defined talent acquisition strategy to guide which tools to select and how to use them social media will waste … your … time.  If a recruiter needs to hire a team of accounting staff, how do they use social media for maximum impact? Should the recruiter tweet incessantly? Should they start a LinkedIn group and try to get accountants to join?  Is a YouTube video in order? more »

City Beat: Atlanta

Blog: Author: Alan Mellish | Source: HCI | January 24, 2012

This week, we are pulling into Atlanta, Georgia. In addition to being the site of our 2012 Strategy and Workforce Planning Conference, this growing metropolis goes by many names: Hotlanta, ATL, and the City too Busy to Hate.  Between 2000 and 2009, the metro population grew by 29.9% and every day the city grows by 62.4% in population as 259,957 commuters make their way into work from the suburbs. Atlanta ranks 4th in the nation for the number of Fourtune 500 companies headquartered within city boundaries. Finally, with the median age at 31.9 it is among the younger large cities in the U.S. In short, it appears the ATL is a magnet for talent. more »

City Beat: San Diego

Blog: Author: Alan Mellish | Source: HCI | January 17, 2012

Next up in the City Beat Chronicles: San Diego, California. Known as “America’s Finest City”, eighth largest city in the United States, and a hub of trade, tourism, manufacturing, and defense/military jobs, this city is home to diverse and youthful talent.  However, with the growing economic woes of the Golden State this town is getting less youthful. In a Brookings Institute study, San Diego reported the sixth biggest net loss of residents aged 25-34 between 2008 and 2010 in the U.S.   The population of San Diego proper is about 1.3 million, with the metro area weighing in at a whopping 3 million.  Like much of California, this city suffers from an unemployment rate higher than the national average at 9.2 percentmore »

On-The-Go Talent: Reach Them Anywhere

Blog: Author: Amanda Lewis | Source: HCI | January 17, 2012

According to Gartner Predicts 2009, mobility is the future of computing; by 2013, there will be more people using smart phones with access to web-based applications than laptops. Suffice it to say, the next generation of computing is upon us and is fueled by powerful mobile devices.  Over the last few years social media recruiting has become the norm in HR and acquisition conversations however, mobile recruiting has yet to become as mainstream. Why not? Who among us currently uses mobile technology for recruiting and how? more »

Blog: Author: Amanda Lewis | Source: HCI | December 6, 2011

We’re three weeks away from 2012, it hardly seems possible. Have you made your New Year’s resolution yet? City Beat: Austin

Blog: Author: Alan Mellish | Source: HCI | December 5, 2011

It’s back! The City Beat blog is beating its way down south for some Texas-sized talent talk.  That’s right, Austin, TX (aka the Live Music Capital of the World aka Silicon Hills).  In a recent Brookings Institution report, Austin was the fifth biggest gainer of 25-34 year-olds between 2008 and 2010 in the U.S.  With a population of 799, 446 in the city limits and approximately 1.8 million in the greater metropolitan area, Austin has a winning combination of being a “cool city” attractive to Generation Y workers (see Portland, OR) but also has the additional benefit of being a high tech city home to many IT, defense,  and bio-tech/pharma firms.   Unemployment in Austin was at 6.1% in March 2011 which is none too shabby compared with the national rate at 8.6% in November of 2011 and the Texan rate at 8.4%. more »

Hang Up the Phone: The New Way to Check References

Blog: Author: Amanda Lewis | Source: HCI | November 22, 2011

How do you check the references of potential hires? Do you check at all? I wouldn’t blame if you’ve given up on a process that seems arbitrary and outdated (thanks in part to the volume of information you can find by simply Googling someone nowadays. If you DO – What is your strategy? Since so many companies will only verify dates of employment and title; returning your call isn’t on the top or even middle of their priority list. Is the method of calling and taking a chance on getting answers on a few canned questions worth it to you anymore? Most likely the HR department will be who answers your questions not the person who “candidate x” directly reported to. How does knowing basic employment information from a file help you predict future performance? It doesn’t. more »
