Talent Leadership

Where Do You Want to Go? Let Your Talent Guide the Way

Blog: Author: Joy Kosta, HCS, SWP | Source: HCI | 1 day ago

With the big re-set of the economy still in progress, it is far from thriving, however the people you lead still can thrive. A large part of that is up to leaders. New research from the Ross School of Business’s Center for Positive Organizational Scholarship published in Jan-Feb HBR, says that thriving is a function of vitality (being excited about making a difference) and learning (which reinforces people’s belief in their potential for growth)-- “The combination of vitality and learning leads to employees who deliver results and find ways to grow….they successfully perform what’s expected of them today but also have a sense of where they and the company are headed…the energy they create is contagious.” more »

This is What Matters Now

Blog: Author: Katherine Ratkiewicz | Source: HCI | 1 day ago

For the past few years, we’ve been leading up to this point – rightsizing, restructuring, looking for ways to do more with less, and trying to place bets on what will position our organizations for success in our time. My bet is that it’s all about innovation and disruption – rethinking the way we “do” business and the way we “do” leadership - in order to meet the big, hairy, business challenges that are just around the corner.Who better to help us rethink the biggest business issues of our time than the Wall Street Journal’s #1 ranked most influential business thinker – Gary Hamel? In his brand new book, What Matters Now – How to Win in a World of Relentless Change, Ferocious Competition, and Unstoppable Innovation he tackles the very questions that business leaders and human capital practitioners alike are grappling with every day. He explores the “fundamental, make-or-break issues that will determine whether your organization thrives or dives in the years ahead”- sounds like just what we need! more »

Are You Using Up Your Talent?

Blog: Author: Joy Kosta, HCS, SWP | Source: HCI | January 25, 2012

If you heard President Obama’s State of the Union address, there was an overarching message of helping America thrive. Several references were made to creating success in the workplace: “An economy built to last is one where we encourage the talent and ingenuity of every person in this country…. Growing industries in science and technology have twice as many jobs as people who know how to do the jobs… to prepare for the jobs of tomorrow our commitment to skills and education has to start earlier.” more »

Fuel-Injected Leadership

Blog: Author: Joy Kosta, HCS, SWP | Source: HCI | January 19, 2012

Years ago, when taking a family drive on Sundays was a typical outing, we would inevitably get lost. This would perturb my older sister (who became a scientist), but for me, being someplace new was when the sense of adventure began (in retrospect, our respective career choices make great sense). My parents used to say (this was before there was GPS and i-phones), “You’re never lost as long you have gas in the tank.” So I appreciate them encouraging my quest for what's new. And Yogi Berra said, “We’re lost, but making good time.” However, in today’s business world, organizations don’t have unlimited fuel (either tangible assets or intangible assets) to find out where they’re going. Our individual competitive advantage as a leader is the fuel injection for how our organization runs, stalls, idles, or performs at full throttle. more »

Strategic Deployment for the Future

Blog: Author: Joy Kosta, HCS, SWP | Source: HCI | January 6, 2012

As the new year begins, you may have spent some constructive time visioning, strategizing and planning  how the year can play out. I found myself thinking about that after seeing an interview of Steve Jobs, about when he bought Pixar Films, and invested in developing the company’s potential year after year, because he believed in what they could achieve. Today Pixar is recognized as wildly successful. What I took away from that story is Job’s ability to identify potential for the future and make the investment in talent; both rely on being visionary. As leaders, when we make talent deployment decisions that will achieve our vision, we rely to some extent on instinct, as well as on available evidence, a deep understanding of the operations in our company, and emerging trends. more »

Making a List and Checking it Twice: Perks That Keep Giving

Blog: Author: Joy Kosta, HCS, SWP | Source: HCI | December 15, 2011

The Wall Street Journal this week published findings from a Randstad US survey, Employee Attachment Index Q4 2011, revealing what people were willing to lose in order to keep their jobs. At the same time the fragile economy has companies considering multiple ways to make their year-end bottom line, while retaining their best talent; these decisions aren’t easy from either side, but certainly the economy cannot afford for companies to close their doors. Randstad US found, that in order to keep their jobs, what people were willing to lose... more »

The Emerging Trend of Reward Transparency

Blog: Author: Joy Kosta, HCS, SWP | Source: HCI | December 8, 2011

Last night I went to an uplifting musical theatre production of “Annie”- the play was set in 1932 when America was in the trough of the Great Depression, as President Franklin D. Roosevelt created the New Deal to put Americans back to work, re-building the country’s infrastructure, and transformed the economy which had been shattered by the crash. Historians have noted the major psychological impact of the depression on Americans and how Roosevelt’s deal boosted America's self-esteem. It wasn’t hard to see the parallels between “Annie” and today’s economy. more »

Driving Collaboration Underground, Out in the Open, or Up to the Cloud

Blog: Author: Joy Kosta, HCS, SWP | Source: HCI | December 2, 2011

The hot competencies these days seem to go hand-in-hand… collaboration and innovation, with the belief that from robust collaboration comes innovative break throughs. I sat in this week on HCI’s first on-line delivery of a new course Engagement, Collaboration and Retention, and I was impressed how seamlessly the members participating from a variety of industries, who had never met before, went into breakout discussions and debriefed with the larger group.  We may take for granted the virtual workspace these days, which gives people the option of an a-synchronous virtual space to work in, brainstorm and solve shared problems. more »

The Confidence Factor

Blog: Author: Joy Kosta, HCS, SWP | Source: HCI | November 10, 2011

When you prepare an important leadership deliverable, to what extent does self-confidence help with the impact?  Anyone in sales knows that conveying belief in a product’s performance helps to influence buyers’ perceptions. If you’re among the people who over prepare, do you think that helps with your confidence and your ability to address contingencies that arise?

Valerie Young, author of “The Secret Thoughts of Successful Women,” reviewed in this week’s Wall Street Journal, says, “Seventy percent of successful people have experienced the imposter syndrome at some point in their careers. While men can suffer from it…it is more common among women… the imposter syndrome usually strikes women who make it in male-dominated industries.” more »
