Whip Up Some Great Ideas: Make the Most of Talent Knowledge

Blog: Author: Joy Kosta | Source: HCI | March 9, 2010

Talent surveys indicate that developmental opportunities go a long way to engage and retain talent; hear more in an upcoming webcast on Engaging and Retaining Talent on April 22 during which Towers Watson will present findings of their latest Global Workforce study. One of the things development depends on is a continuous influx of good ideas, that when applied on the job improve performance. But taking that next step requires sharing knowledge with others about what has been learned, what the benefits have been. There are several places to document shared knowledge—in FAQ’s, in legendary stories, in shared wiki’s (see example in blog Accelerating Learning Innovation at Genetech). Here’s another blog with more about this, Treat Learning as a Process, Not an Event from guest blogger Andrew Jefferson. How do you do document applied knowledge in your organization? more »

Getting to "No"

Blog: Author: Joshua Ehrlich | Source: HCI | January 12, 2010

The clear response from HCI members is that unscheduled interruptions interferes most with your ability to stop the action to focus and think. To deal with unscheduled interruptions you need to set boundaries. If you have any interest in being seen as Nice, this can be a challenge. Simply put, you need to be more ruthless (without being nasty). You need to say ‘no’ to people. At first this can be difficult, but I have found colleagues learn quickly to respect my boundaries. It has also grown my team’s ability to make decisions and do things for themselves.  more »

Get Your Talent Development Toolbox in Order

Blog: Author: Joy Kosta | Source: HCI | December 21, 2009

Have you been rummaging through your toolbox at home as you looked for hooks, wires, and hardware to make and hang up holiday decorations?  Well, I hadn’t sorted through my toolbox since-- well I can’t remember when- so that went on the New Year’s Resolution list, though in all due respect, I’m no Martha Stewart. As usual, in sorting and organizing I begin to think about how important the tools are according to how often I use them. That got me to thinking about two huge tools for talent development (the holidays may make it easier to take a day off of “work” than to take work out of my brain).  My next thought was that there are far more than two tools for Talent Development, but the obvious sort was into two big buckets—one is our BRAIN – yes, because informal learning couldn’t happen without it. Why informal learning?  According to Marcia Connor’s articles in Fast Company, informal learning accounts for over 75% of the learning taking place in organizations today. more »
