By 2014 30,000 new patients will be looking to 5000 hospitals for healthcare… that’s 6000 new patients for healthcare talent --which is already in short supply-- to deliver care and services. How will healthcare providers prepare? It certainly gives the workforce planning folks a lot to tackle, not to mention talent development, leadership and talent acquisition. Will healthcare be reaching into the schools to help prepare ancillary care talent for the next few years? Will hospitals be sponsoring return to school for their loyal staff to move into entry level clinical positions? Will there be new career paths to retain top talent? How will an industry that at best has a 3 percent “profit” margin re-design their total rewards and work-life balance to deeply engage their talent, especially when reimbursement levels will in part depend on patient satisfaction? And how will employers be extending coverage to a new group of workers? I’m eager to explore these questions.
