For those of you who don’t “game” or who do but haven’t found this little treasure I’m going to HIGHLY recommend you download it today on your mobile device! Unless of course you don’t want to become a slave to this tiny (pun intended), highly addictive game with a talent management twist.
Here’s the scoop: You own a building and need to expand it. You start with an apartment level and one business level. Keep the business stocked and customers come and spend money, use your profits to build more levels. They can be different types of businesses and of course you will have to keep adding apartments so you can hire staff to support them. Now it gets a little tricky, each “bitizen” has skills per type of business and are rated from 1-9 and has a “dream job”. The lower the rating the worse they will do at that job, the higher the rating… Well you get the picture. I wish I could actively recruit and conduct interviews before hiring…
I realized the other day that I needed to evict some of my bitizens and start over. I wasn’t matching their skill levels to their jobs. I thought it was better hiring someone to work in my Sushi Restaurant who had no skills in that area than having only one employee. Boy was I wrong! My poor little bitizen who dreamed of working at the Aquarium not only didn’t perform well but he made his fellow employee (who did want to work there) perform less than ideally as well. It hurt but I had to let him go. HCI and Kelly Services recently conducted research into the supply chain of talent. Specifically, how organizations understand where, why and how they will use all types of talent, including contractors. Are you using social media to find, engage and connect with top talent?
If only real life was as simple. Imagine if every resume you received had a rating from 1-9 on it! We all make hiring mistakes. What does it take for you to evict your non-performing talent and start over? Is there a line? Would you say performance or culture should be the driving force between letting someone go? What do you do if you have an employee who is a performance rockstar but doesn’t get along with non-performers in the organization?
If only life was as cut and dry as my Tiny Tower.
