Almost all performance management systems share two characteristics: Associates hate them and managers think they are a waste of time. However, The Orvis Company successfully uses key performance measures (KPMs) for all its associates. Orvis has succeeded where others have failed by re-conceptualizing what KPMs are meant to achieve-they are truly about performance management, not performance appraisal. In fact, it would be better to describe what Orvis does with KPMs as performance enhancement rather than performance management. At the very heart of the Orvis approach is that KPMs are meant to help Associates, rather than being a control mechanism wielded by management.
