To be a valuable resource to our members, HCI always wants to know what challenges our members are facing in talent management and what successes they are experiencing. I love reading comments members make after webcasts--either during the live webcast, or on the track page where they registered (you may have noticed this new interactive feature), or on the webcast evaluations. Sharing what I've learned last week below, along with what I'm up to this week...
What I learned from HCI leadership members attending webcasts last week in Talent Development and Talent Leadership:
Member comments and good questions came in after this webcast A Legacy of Leadership: Mentoring Your Successor. A live webcast poll revealed that more than half of public sector member respondents were involved in mentoring programs in substantive ways - so the importance of mentoring to succession planning might be a message that's beginning to get through to decision-makers. Check out the related e-Briefing. A related webcast take away that stayed with me was how much mentoring benefits the leadership abilities of those who mentor promising talent; see Mentors Speak! How Mentoring Improved their Leadership and related e-Briefing.
Leadership tips I’ve read today:
Loved this article by Dan McCarthy The “One Thing” Approach to Leadership Development. That makes me think about the motivation to develop and sustaining new habits.
I was catching up with Andy Jefferson, Chief Executive Officer of Fort Hill Company last week. You might remember that Andy presented The New Finish Line for Learning and Development. Andy reminded me that doing a behavior 21 days establishes it as a habit, but that it doesn’t have to be 21 consecutive days; however, he also pointed out that if you don’t begin a behavior within 7 days of learning it, chances are the learning will not get transferred into practice. Check out the gret book Andy co-authored with Cal Wick, with a new edition about to be released The Six Disciplines of Breakthrough Learning: How to Turn Training and Development Into Business Results.
What’s coming up in Talent Leadership this week:
Two great webcasts- Jan 26 (also see re-casts for following two days) ROI Speak! Use Business Language to Make Your Case on making your business case to the top team. his webcast will cover a successful case study from work done at Wachovia, pitched to the perspective of business decision makers. Patti Phillips, CEO of the ROI Institute, presented at the recent webcast in this series, with The ROI of Rewarding Talent (again, if you missed it, register for the re-casts coming up, and keep your eye on this series on ROI of Talent Management). I just read Patti's Jan blog post Selecting an Evaluation Approach which re-caps some great takeaways for leadership.
On Jan 27 for all of you out there who work in a virtual world (and for those who are responsible for engaging virtual talent), this webcast is going to rock your virtual world-- Onboarding and Re-boarding Virtual Talent (again if you can't make the live webcast, register for the re-casts), in the webcast series on Comprehensive Onboarding.
Well, I better get back to work. But oh, yes, a P.S. Because I'm hesitant to chat alot during the webcast itself, I’d love to talk with you, HCI members, afterwards, so if you have an “aha moment” during a webcast, or want to bounce ideas around about applying webcast take aways, would love to talk with you briefly on the phone. Since I’m known to be an act now/urgent person, I may reach out and call you to hear your thoughts, or invite you to group call where you can connect with other HCI members… now that’s building Talent Leadership Community! I look forward to connecting :-)
