July Volunteer Activities

Quotes from July volunteers:

"My time at Selamta was a beautiful and moving experience. The children taught me something invaluable every day I was there, and saying goodbye to them was one of the hardest emotional tasks I have ever had to perform. The children in the Selamta program are some of the most caring and loving individuals I have ever met. The fact that these children are able to show unconditional compassion for one another, while very few of them are blood related is a perfect illustration of what utterly wonderful change the Selamta program has brought to all of these kids lives."

A New Family

"As I sipped my strong cup of espresso, I reflected on the beautiful sounds coming from the courtyard. I could hear the kids (including Erinn’s twins, and Kate’s daughter) laughing, jumping rope, and playing games—the sounds of what childhood should be."

Oh, NO! Poor Zenebech

Blog Author: Carol Foster | Source: Selamta | February 26, 2010

Our darling Zenebech was hit by a mini-bus last week and was pretty banged up.  The driver took her to a inexpensive hospital where the doctor turned her away!  Zene managed to get back home, but when Tesfeye took a look at her, he called an ambulance immediately.

What a trip! From Carolynne Krusi volunteering in Addis Ababa

Hello from Ethiopia!

We have just returned from one of the most wonderful adventures I can remember our trip to Bishangri, with the kids, Tsefye, Ishmael, Adam and Bray.The wide-eyed wonder of the kids seeing baboons and hippos, swimming and riding bikes for the first time, and singing songs in a tree house can hardly be described.

Notes on the Selamta garden project by John Carroll

Blog Author: Carol Foster | Source: Selamta | February 13, 2010

Today at four in the afternoon about a dozen of the kids met up with me at Tewordros House to begin gathering the materials for the kitchen gardens at Tewodros, Haile Selassie, Axum, and Hosannah houses.  Iarrived early and dug out about a half-ton of dirt from a pile of waste soil left from home-building in the area.  I have to pick over the dirt piles, avoiding clayey dirt, looking for friable soil with good organic content.  While I was doing this, several local (non-Selamta) kids drifted over and watched, then started helping by carrying buckets-full of dirt to the staging area where I will later combine the dirt with other materials that will turn the dirt into good soil suitable for container gardening.

The fun part of the day was gathering materials to create good soil for the container gardens we are starting in the houses.
