Becoming a Sponsor is Literally Joining the Selamta Family!

The goal of the sponsorship program is to help our kids to become happy, healthy and productive citizens with your investment into their future and our work in country. Frankly, it is generous people like you that make the difference in our overall budget to give the Selamta children every opportunity available to succeed in life. Sponsor families have the opportunity to create lasting emotional bonds with their Selamta child and become part of the child's life as he/she grows into adulthood. With the exchange of letters, photographs, and emails, the children feel that they know that they are being an incredible gift of love and support. Each child is motivated to work hard at school to make you proud and prove that appreciate this opportunity. We encourage our Sponsor family to visit their child and enjoy the hospitality of their extended Selamta Family in Addis, hopefully to attend their graduation!

Total Care Sponsorship

$800 dollars will sponsor a child at Selamta for one year and that includes everything. Sponsorship dollars provide the budget to allow our children to attend private school, buy school supplies, receive medical and dental care, and gives our Selamta-trained mothers a small budget for special birthday presents, holiday celebrations, after-school classes, tutoring that enrich the lives of our children. This financial support helps pay for a portion of the rent, food and utilities in their family home as well. In addition we are so pleased to say that $10 a month will be put into a savings account for each child for when they are ready to go out into the world. This small savings account will make a big difference when each child finishes school and starts their adult life.

We have had many families and friends co-sponsor a child or sibling group and enjoy sharing the experience and the connection with “their kids” in Ethiopia.

Outreach Sponsorship

This is our attempt at a much-needed social recognition and acceptance program that HIV can be an ongoing chronic disease in a country that still considers it a stigma that should be not talked about, let alone acknowledged. Today, HIV/AIDS can be treated successfully, if caught early enough, with the free anti-retroviral medication available at different locations throughout Addis Ababa. The stigma of being positive is so great that going to the clinic and risking being seen is enough of a threat that getting medication is avoided. Even today, being identified as HIV positive often leads to loss of job, being ostracized by family, friends and community, plus having their children expelled from school. This starts the cycle of complete breakdown of financial security, medical crisis and despair. We are working to identify families that can be helped before the children are abandoned or orphaned.

Sponsor a child in outreach for $400 dollars a year. Our outreach sponsorship program pays for school tuition and supplies for a child living outside of Selamta with a parent or relative who is HIV positive or a grandmother who cannot support her children's children. We want to keep these families together by supplying the financial resources to have enough to eat and send the child(ren) to school. We encourage the head of household, usually very ill at the time we meet them, to improve and maintain their health with medication and rest. Our staff also provides ongoing support, counseling and friendship through with a monthly check in and open invitation to all holiday celebrations at Selamta Children's Home.

Embedded in this outreach program is the promise that if the parent(s) succumbs to the disease or grandmother is unable to maintain as she ages, the children will be safe within our Selamta Family Project as sisters and brothers in a new family. Because the family has been welcomed into all of Selamta's celebration, the children know where they are going and the family can see the love and support the children will have in the future.
This is a great comfort as you can imagine.

Family Sponsorship

This is the highest form of investing in the future of the families of Selamta. When you sponsor a whole family, it makes our job of reaching out to more children that much easier. Your can watch as your family of ten grow toward a healthy, educated and motivated future. These children will become adults who support their mom, have jobs and become leaders in a country who need people who have been orphaned and want to change attitudes around social issues that cause such despair. We encourage you personally, or your whole family, business or religious community to adopt a family as a multi-year investment opportunity to get involved and stay involved as we fight against poverty, AIDS and the staggering numbers of orphans worldwide. Roll up your sleeves and take the challenge to virtually adopt!

A Selamta Family Home costs $8,000 per year to support. This amount will care for eight children and two women completely. This includes rent, maintenance, furniture, kitchen equipment, supplies, food, fuel, utilities and everything else needed to create a complete and beautiful home. It also provides the children with complete medical coverage, school tuition, books and uniforms, and enrichment activities. It also invites you to open up to a tremendous amount of love and grateful hearts that will be sent via letters and e-mail. For Current Sponsors

We understand that one of the most exciting parts of sponsorship is getting to know your child through letters, drawings, and photos. We know that your child is also eager to have a relationship with you as well.

Sending letters to our Post Office Box in Ethiopia:
Sending letters through the mail gives you the freedom to write whenever you wish instead of waiting for a volunteer to bring letters to Ethiopia. We advise you not to send anything of value through the mail as mail sometimes fails to arrive at its final destination. We also suggest making a copy of letters that you send through the mail in case the original is lost.

Sending packages and letters with volunteers:
Several times a year volunteers travel to Selamta Children's Home and are often willing to deliver letters and small gifts to the children. We will let you know in advance when someone is planning a trip to Ethiopia so you can mail or drop off items at the Human Capital Foundation office in White River Junction.

Communicating via e-mail:
We have an e-mail account set up just for sponsors to send messages to Selamta. It is ok to send attachments, but please do not include too many pictures or else it will overwhelm the slow internet connection there in Ethiopia. Selamta staff will print your messages and help your child respond by e-mail or written mail. In your e-mail please include your full name and your child's full name.
