9:00-9:45 AM
Opening Address: Keynote Presenter:
David Novak, Executive Chairman, Yum! Brands Inc.
Learn More Close

Bestselling author and globally acclaimed leadership expert David Novak is the Executive Chairman of Yum! Brands, one of the world’s largest restaurant companies with more than 41,000 KFC, Pizza Hut and Taco Bell restaurants in over 125 countries and territories.

Novak has been recognized as “2012 CEO of the Year” by Chief Executive magazine, one of the world’s “30 Best CEOs” by Barron’s, one of the “Top People in Business” by FORTUNE and one of the “100 Best-Performing CEOs in the World” by Harvard Business Review.

Novak wrote TAKING PEOPLE WITH YOU: The Only Way to Make BIG Things Happen (January 2012), a New York Times and Wall Street Journal best-seller based on a successful leadership program he personally taught at the Company centered on teamwork and a belief in people that rewards and recognizes customer-focused behavior.  Proceeds from the sale of this book are donated to the United Nations World Food Programme.

Novak delivers a battle-tested leadership guide to building great companies by developing great talent. He teaches that leaders will never make big things happen until they learn how to get people aligned, enthusiastic and focused relentlessly on the mission. Novak shares the secrets of his unique leadership program, such as: setting big goals but celebrating the small wins to build motivation along the way; winning loyalty by practicing “extraordinary authenticity” and occasionally admitting you don’t have the answers; and getting rid of cynics who spread negative energy to your staff.

Sharing his own experiences and exploring other real-life leadership challenges, Novak pinpoints the strategies that led to successful outcomes and explains how they can be applied to a wide variety of business situations.

You’ll change the way you think about leadership and learn how to get the best from your staff—and yourself—with practical strategies for developing talent, empowering people, building teams and creating a success-oriented corporate culture.

At worst you just had a shooting pain pierce you right between the eyeballs.  The annual performance review is 70 years old this year. In that time humans have innovated in leaps and bounds. But for some reason we still hold on to the performance review.  A relic of the post-World War II workplace.   Why do organizations put up with this process?  What benefit is it providing to their company or it's people?

More than 10 years ago the Motley Fool kaboomed! the ole performance . We've since evolved to a set of 5 simple principles and practices that make up the foundation of our award winning culture.  A thriving culture of  highly engaged, highly productive, Fools.

You will learn:

What’s needed is a robust succession management strategy that deepens the talent pipeline for the top level and other key roles. We call this talent pipeline “the seven CEOs”—the current senior leader and six others at various stages in their career development. During this session, you will hear how organizations can develop a high-potential program that identifies, evaluates, and develops a sustainable slate of candidates all the way down the leadership pipeline to support business strategy.

Technology is fundamentally changing how companies operate, interact with customers and maintain a competitive advantage – regardless of the company’s market segment.  A recent Forbes article about technology said, “It’s not just that technology is moving faster, the rate of change is actually accelerating and that alters the logic by which we need to operate.  Our intuition and experience lead us to assume a much slower pace.”

Keeping an internal IT organization skilled and its workforce enabled is a daunting task amidst a rapidly changing technology environment.  Building an enduring partnership with IT requires a new level of understanding of technical business needs and a new level of creativity in developing technical talent strategies.  Within the Global Technology & Operations division of MetLife, and in partnership with HR, we have created MetLife Technical University as a key hiring differentiator for early-in-career technical talent.  The early business results of the program are exciting and are changing the way we grow and enable technical talent for the entire Global Technology organization.

You will learn:

  • How to understand the business of technology - key IT business drivers
  • How to develop technical talent in a continuously changing environment
  • Lessons learned in acquiring and developing technical talent

Strong leadership is more than just a competitive advantage; it’s what separates world-class companies from the rest. Today, the need for effective leadership is unprecedented. Surveys consistently report that leadership is a key concern in the C-Suite. Gaps in the leadership pipeline, changing leadership requirements, inadequate leadership capabilities, and greater needs to grow talent internally all point to the importance of assessing leadership talent.

Aon Hewitt Top Companies for Leaders® research on leadership and talent management indicates that an emphasis on growing leadership capabilities at all levels is a key differentiator. Sustainable success requires a solid leadership pipeline. While the importance of selecting and developing senior leaders has long been recognized as an organizational imperative, ensuring a robust pipeline, requires focus on all levels of leadership, from front-line and mid-level to top executives. In both existing and emerging markets, creative new approaches to assessing talent can support the selection and development of a strong bench of leaders to meet both short and long term needs.

In this session you will learn:

  • How those organizations renown for developing leaders are using assessment to create a competitive advantage
  • The advantages and disadvantages of various approaches to leadership assessment and how the use of simulations, computer adaptive testing, and 360 surveys can be used to identify, select, and accelerate the development of leaders
  • Cutting edge information on the “DNA” of leadership that is most effective in today’s volatile, uncertain, complex, ambiguous (“VUCA”) world of work

Golden Living, a family of healthcare companies, prides itself on redefining health care delivery. Through a comprehensive approach that puts the individual first, Golden Living delivers award-winning care across its residential, hospice and rehabilitation services. Finding the right employees in rural or remote service locations hasn’t always been easy, but with a new recruiting strategy, Golden Living has been able to staff facilities across the country with expert and dedicated staff.

In this session, we’ll take a closer look at how today’s acquisition executives use comprehensive demographic information to help acquire and place strategic talent. Armed with information about its employees buying patterns, restaurants of choice, what they prefer to see in advertisements (be it photography or graphics in various geographies), the talent acquisition team has been able to develop communications that resonate with job candidates.  They’ve also used this data and insight to identify best-fit candidates and match them to the locations where they will most likely thrive.  The results speak for themselves. At the end of 2014, Golden Living’s 61 LivingCenters earned 5 stars from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Five-Star Quality Rating System, placing them in the top 10% of nursing home facilities in the United States.

You will learn:

  • How to leverage data and insights about your current employees preferences to better recruit new employees
  • How to use demographic data to identify employees likely to thrive in particular locations

Change the Marketplace — Change the Rules

Keynote Presenter:
Charles Best, Founder and CEO of DonorsChoose.org
Learn More Close

Charles shares how, as a 24-year-old teacher at a Bronx high school, he created a model of giving hailed as "the future of philanthropy" by The New York Times. His story covers the high school wrestling coach who inspired him to become a teacher, the most humiliating mistake he ever made getting DonorsChoose.org off the ground, and the most poignant moments, such as the projects teachers created to recover from the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center.  Today, teachers at half of all the public schools in America have created projects on DonorsChoose.org, and more than a million people have given $200 million.

Charles connects this story to the rise of Kickstarter and Etsy, sites that—like DonorsChoose.org—enable anyone to go public with their originality. These sites signal a profound change in how long you have to wait, and who you have to know, and how lucky you have to be, to bring a good idea to life.  They represent a new kind of marketplace where gatekeepers no longer stand in your way.

Charles enables the audience to experience this change by giving everyone a DonorsChoose.org gift card (underwritten by his speaker’s fee) to spend on a classroom project of their choice, so they can directly connect with a classroom in need.

You will learn:

How to implement the model of giving hailed as "the future of philanthropy"

How to bring good ideas to life in your organization

The new model of innovation - no more gatekeepers

Coaching is a proven approach to Executive Leadership development.  The success can be attributed to the personalized approach and the constant adaptation to the needs of the individual “learner.”  But hiring a certified professional coach is expensive, and is usually reserved for the most senior members of an organization.  What if it were possible to assign certified professional coaches to leaders at all levels of the organization?  This highly interactive session presents a plan for using coaching as a corporate training approach by certifying select individuals within an organization in professional coaching and by training current supervisors and managers in holding effecting coaching conversations.  During the session, you will learn and practice the basic technique of coaching, a skill that will likely improve your ability to communicate with many people in your work, life, and family.

You will learn:

  • An adaptable and scalable plan for implementing an internal coaching program that accelerates the readiness of emerging leaders in your organization
  • How to choose the best approach, coaching, mentoring, or counseling, when encountering a short-term workplace challenge

Today’s employees speak to be heard, often and across a multitude of channels. Leaders must be more agile and responsive than ever before, and they require new forms of employee engagement to build better company cultures; namely continuous, multichannel feedback collection, and real time, actionable insights.  As employee engagement is inextricably linked to business’ bottom lines, organizations need management solutions linking these employee engagement offerings to leadership strategy execution. Fortunately, advances in NLP and machine leading technologies make all of this possible. By combining quantitative metrics, and for the first time, key qualitative factors, companies can automatically identify and resolve critical employee issues--such as recruitment efficacy, retention risk, and diversity--and marry these insights with important business outcomes and metrics.

This session explores actionable ways to increase employee engagement through real-time, multi-channel actionable insights. In this presentation we will detail the implications of continuous, human driven employee feedback, which include the development of structures to empower managers and processes for efficient and agile organizations.

You will learn:

  • How to develop dashboards for all appropriate job functions--such as data analyst, compensation, diversity and inclusion, benefits manager, executive--to better measure and manage employees
  • How to improve efficiency by eliminating manual scoring of unstructured text data such as surveys, performance reviews, and social media
  • How to incorporate qualitative factors like emotion and intensity into traditional quantitative analysis to reveal the intent of employees
  • How to harness the power of real-time business insights within departments, divisions, and manager networks to make data-driven decisions

HR has been opining for some time now on the meaning and importance of serving as a strategic business partner.  We have, to varying degrees, had to insist to be seated at the ‘table’, created the seat and maybe even the table itself in start-up situations.  But, are we truly ready?  Have we stretched ourselves as HR leaders to places of absolute discomfort?  Are we just as good at being business leaders as we are at serving in our HR capacities?  What’s next for the field?  I’ll provoke a healthy conversation, food for thought and tasks for action that challenge all of us around these concepts.

You will learn:

  • What it means to be a business leader first, and an HR leader second
  • How we can engage in ‘possibility thinking’ to innovate around revenue generation for our businesses – yes, that’s right, supporting revenue generation and not just managing costs!
  • When and how we must be intentional about determining the ROI of talent solutions for the enterprise
  • How we can – and must - systematically endeavor to become successors to the top seats in the C-Suite – i.e. COO, CEO.  It’s time.
