Vice President Executive Development at Bates Communications

In his role as Vice President of Executive Development, Bill’s focus is on developing research-based approaches to executive assessment and development. A management psychologist with over 20 years of experience in executive development, Bill has led our efforts to design the Bates Executive Presence Index (Bates ExPI™), the first-ever multi-rater survey instrument for measuring executive presence. As a result, we have transformed an admired and desired quality of leadership from an “I know it when I see it” idea to a research-based model of executive presence. This enables us to help leaders obtain feedback on the “right stuff,” the variables that really make a difference. With that insight, leaders are able to formulate clear goals and specific development strategies to enhance their presence and impact. That is the kind of assessment-based and business-relevant client work we are committed to delivering. Whether the development needs concern individual leadership, bolstering team dynamics, or leading organizational change, we are committed to providing innovative and practical solutions. Bill is here to help us deliver on that promise.

Prior to joining Bates, Bill served as Managing Director and Senior Consultant in the Boston office of RHR International Company, an international management psychology consultancy. Before that, he played similar roles with Right Management. His early career started with IBM and also include several years with a unit of Cisco. He has extensive experience consulting to individuals and organizations in the U.S., Western Europe, and South Africa. Bill’s experience spans most sector of the economy including the life sciences, health care, insurance, professional services, manufacturing, technology, retail, and higher education.
