In 2014, Towers Watson set out to explore the latest issues shaping the employment deal. Through two complementary global research initiatives — the 2014 Global Workforce Study (GWS) of over 32,000 employees, and the 2014 Global Talent Management & Rewards Study (TM&R) of 1,637 organizations — we discovered employee and employer perspectives, and important disconnects between them, on the driving factors of attraction, retention and sustainable engagement.

What did we find?

• Nearly two in three employer respondents are experiencing problems attracting top performers and high-potential employees – an increase from two years ago. 
• Additionally more than half report difficulty retaining high-potential employees and top performers. 

So what does it take to get and keep talent now?  The fundamentals – base pay, job security and career advancement opportunities – matter most to employees globally when deciding to join or leave an organization. Yet, employers don’t always understand the rewards and talent management programs that workers value most.
